The Story Behind the Bottle

Maison Joseph Drouhin was founded in 1880 and, for over 140 years, has been crafting some of Burgundy’s most distinguished wines.

Today, the estate is run by the founder’s four grandchildren. Philippe Drouhin, who walked the vineyards with his father as a child, now oversees the vines. A pioneer in sustainable viticulture, he led the transition to organic and then biodynamic farming across the family’s holdings.

His sister, Véronique Boss-Drouhin, is the winemaker and custodian of the Drouhin style. “It is my duty to respect the grapes that arrive in the winery in order to enhance the signatures of our precious and esteemed terroirs to their fullest potential,” she explains.

Bonnes Mares Grand Cru sits between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, producing wines that marry depth and structure with aromatic finesse. Drouhin’s Bonnes Mares is a striking example – powerful yet poised, with layers of dark fruit, spice and mineral tension.

Neal Martin awards the wine 93-95 points, praising its: “red cherry, raspberry and forest floor scents, with hints of iris flower in the background”.

It’s drinking beautifully now but will reach its peak between 2030 and 2050.
