Dr Loosen Riesling Beerenauslese hails from the Mosel – home to what Decanter calls “the most iconic of all German Rieslings”. The Loosen family have grown vines here for over two centuries, with Ernst Loosen shaping the estate into one of Germany’s finest.
Beerenauslese means the grapes were picked late, affected by noble rot – just like the great dessert wines of Sauternes. The result? A gloriously sweet, exquisitely fine wine, typically with notes of honey, apricot, peach and marmalade.
Amy Wislocki of Decanter gave this superb example 94 points, calling it “just a wonderful sugary treat … the lively acidity and marked minerality balance the fleshy pineapple and peach fruit, keeping it as fresh as a daisy”.
Pair it with tarte tatin or salty blue cheese like Roquefort – or simply enjoy a glass on its own.
