The Wine
As Decanter recently wrote, "Could Tannat become the new Malbec?" With Uruguayan wines as impressive as this, it seems very likely. Tannat makes up 25% of Uruguay's plantings - it's the only country in the world to adopt the variety as its flagship grape. Its thick skins produce too much tannin in most climates, but here it suits the Atlantic cooled vineyards and pure sunshine perfectly. Gimenez Mendez was founded in 1991 by husband and wife team Luis Alberto Giminez and Marta Mendez. They lead the field and have won Best Tannat Trophy often. This superb red uses hand picked grapes from their top Las Brujas vineyard, carefully fermented and aged 12 months in new French and US oak. A definite for roast beef! Decant before serving or cellar.
