Flavour Profile
Made only in years when the harvest achieves the perfect balance, La Grande Année embodies the artistry of Bollinger’s winemakers.
Established in Aÿ in 1829, Bollinger is without doubt one of the top names in Champagne. It remains a family company and is run by the great grandson of founder Ghislain de Montgolfier. The pinnacle of its Champagnes is La Grande Année, produced only in the very best vintages – each bringing its own unique character, alongside the house’s classic elegance.
The 2018 is a Pinot Noir-led blend, backed up by creamy Chardonnay, selected exclusively from Grand and Premier Cru villages like Aÿ and Verzenay. Crucially, the wine is barrel fermented, an expensive process adding considerably to the depth and complexity of flavour. Not only are bottles turned by hand, they are disgorged (the removal of yeast sediment) manually as well.
La Grande Année is as much a work of art as a tribute to winemaking science. Creamy, concentrated and complex, with bright citrus and tart green apple flavours over layers of white peach, apricot and Mirabelle plum fruit, sweet breadcrumbs and floral honey. Delightful solo, it’s a brilliant partner for creamy chicken dishes, seafood risotto and Tarte Tatin.
