A tiny Corbières estate, a red crafted with passion
Château Guillem de Montjustin, Corbières
6 bottles – £126 £84 (£14 per bottle)
12 bottles – £252 £168 (£14 per bottle)
Jean-Baptiste and Amelie Fabre are two passionate young winemakers, devoted to their tiny family estate, Château Guillem de Montjustin. It lies in Fabrezan, within Corbières, bang next door to Boutenac, the most well-known cru of the appellation.
Their finest vineyards are over a century old, planted by Jean-Baptiste’s great grandfather. No wonder then, grapes from these are simply too good to send to the local co-operative, so they started making the wine themselves in a tiny shed-like winery next to the house.
But it's difficult to make winemaking viable when production is so small, and it's all made by hand in their small facilities. So Jean-Baptiste has a day job, consulting for a handful of other top local estates, while Amelie, formerly an official taster for the appellation, has finally been able to give up her day job to concentrate on the vineyards and wine.
Taste their fabulous Corbières and you'll understand why we'd like you to help them make it succeed. Vineyard Partners' support means they'll be able to give all their focus to the vineyards and the winemaking, and much less to sales and marketing. One Vineyard Partner was so impressed, he drove all the way to Corbières to see them.

For a powerful, dark, velvety southern French red, you can't do better than this superb Corbières"

The secret behind their wines – treasured old vines and long-held traditions
Jean-Baptiste and Amelie count themselves very blessed to have such old vineyards in Fabrezan, an exceptional part of Corbières. Most of the vines are survivors from Jean-Baptiste's grandfather and great grandfather’s plantings, so over 100 years old. Yields are therefore naturally low, so fruit and intensity are all there for the taking.
On both sides, their ancestors championed the native varieties of the region: Carignan, Grenache and Syrah. And when Carignan was unfashionable in the 1970s, and growers were called on to grub up their vines, it thankfully fell on deaf ears. Their families knew that if you nurture a small crop from old vines, the quality is amazing. And they have been proved right. Today old-vine Carignan reds are recognised as one of the jewels of this area.
