Founded by Ernie and Jane Hunter in the early 1980s, Hunter’s was the first winery to put New Zealand on the world wine map. That was with a Sauvignon Blanc from the little vineyard beside their tiny winery. How did it happen?
In 1986, Tony Laithwaite invited the couple to attend the London Vintage Festival and their Sauvignon won every award going. It astonished consumers and experts alike. So phenomenal was the result that the next day it was debated in the New Zealand Parliament. Thus started the world’s passion for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
Ernie died tragically soon after their success, but Jane continues to carry the torch, with the help of her brother-in-law, Big Mac, and her two nephews – James as head winemaker and Ed as General manager.
We have remained close to Hunter’s ever since – they are like family. And the Home Block Sauvignon, made purely from the grapes of that original vineyard, is exceptional.

"A superbly structured Sauvignon with real complexity and personality and length of flavour. Delicious!”
Yvonne Yorkin, wine writer
"Hunter’s has been at the forefront of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc since the very beginning – and they’re still turning out some of the region’s most reliably delicious wines"
Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review
