The Story Behind the Bottle
Cariñena lies in northeast Spain, a hot, arid region where sun-loving grapes like Garnacha achieve amazing ripeness. However, there’s a small subzone, Paraje de Urbezo, that just in 2024 has been awarded its own DO in recognition of the stand out quality of its wines. Located between two rivers, its pebbly soils and the sustainable, often organic, practices employed there produce pure, fresh Garnacha reds. Our buyer Sarah was delighted to get wind of this small parcel. It’s from Santiago Gracia’s family bodega, Solar de Urbezo, which is named after the local-born artist Antonio Urbezo, as is the DO. With baked raspberry and cherry fruit, it’s delicious to sip on its own, but also tasty with grilled meats and herby garlic mushrooms.
