Flavour Profile
There is huge praise today from critics for the wines of the Cape. “South Africa is producing some of the most exciting wines in the world today” wrote the Independent, and the country’s Chardonnay is some of the most admired. Decanter wrote, “there’s no doubt South Africa is making world-class Chardonnay”.
The Mira is from the premium Stellenbosch region, from the high coastal vineyards of Helderberg. At 350 metres and just 9km from the Atlantic, the vines are exposed to strong winds, which accounts for the pure, crystalline quality of this superb white. It’s from Uva Mira, an estate founded in 1993 by Desmond and Denise Weedon, who won a Trophy with their first vintage release of Chardonnay in 2006. Its reds are equally fine, with the Trophy for Best Bordeaux Blend awarded in 2014. The same year the property was sold to Toby Vente, CEO in South Africa of Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini, who had fallen in love at first sight with the plot.
Aged gently in oak, the wine has subtle spice with a tight core of mineral freshness. A star white from the Cape that will cellar gracefully too, if you can resist.
