A complex, fruit driven barrel-aged red wine, Touché Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel is made by one of California’s most famous winemakers, using grapes from the impressively old vines of Sonoma’s Biglieri Vineyard.
The name William or ‘Bill’ Knuttel resounds in California wine circles. In the 1980s, Bill was key to establishing Saintsbury as a leader of fine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and later helped build a great reputation for Chalk Hill and Dry Creek wineries too. In 2001, he founded his own estate and today is joined by his daughter Kate and son Sebastian. The name of their Touché Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel pays tribute to the precision and craftsmanship (akin to an expert fencer) that Bill brings to every wine.
Bill has worked with Biglieri Vineyard, an ideally situated Sonoma site, for the last two decades. It lies at the very southern end of Dry Creek Valley, drawing in cool coastal fog and fresh sea air to the otherwise hot area. This is key to the success of Biglieri’s vines, which were planted in 1963. These old vines demand a lot of care and attention, but reward this with highly concentrated fruit with great depth of flavour.
This wine brings complex aromas of black plum and pomegranate, with white pepper and cedar from the French oak. The palate brings juicy black plum and boysenberry fruit, with rich vanilla and peppery hints. It’s a versatile wine, pairing well with a variety of dishes including pulled pork, spicy pasta dishes or aged cheese.
