Flavour Profile
America’s first branded cocktail was born in New Orleans, in the 1800s, at the Sazerac Coffee House. Locals enjoyed toddies of spicy rye whiskey and Peychaud’s bitters, known as the ‘Sazerac’. Sazerac Rye is the whiskey that started it all.
It’s made at the historic Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, America’s oldest continually operating distillery. Sazerac Rye embodies the rich history and traditions of New Orleans, where rye whiskey first gained popularity in the 1800s.
Many industrious farmers and distillers in the United States’ heartland barrelled and shipped their rye whiskeys down the Mississippi River to the bustling city of New Orleans. These spicy, assertive spirits were an instant hit that fuelled the city’s whiskey culture and established the first truly American cocktail, the Sazerac.
Sazerac Rye Whiskey is made with Buffalo Trace’s low-rye mash bill and aged in charred American oak barrels for six years. This creates a sweeter character than other rye whiskeys, without losing its iconic peppery spice. It’s brimming with aromas of vanilla, clove, anise and peppery, followed by sweet, candied citrus and warm spice flavours, with lingering hints of liquorice and pepper that make it perfect for cocktails.
