The Wine
Ribera del Duero is one of the most prized wine regions of Spain. It first gained its vaunted reputation with wines such as the iconic Vega Sicilia. However, the first bodega there was Protos, founded by 11 visionaries in 1927, hence this wine’s name. They won Gold medals with their first vintage! Today they have 2km of underground tunnels, filled with barrels for ageing their top wines and extensive, high-altitude, old vineyards. Protos ’27 is pure Tinto del País, taken from vines at least 50 years old, planted at 800 metres. That’s high and means the grapes ripen slowly and the wine has superb freshness. Aged for 16 months in new French oak, this wine is silky, elegant and fresh, with ripe black fruits, sweet spices and toasted notes.
