The Story Behind the Bottle
The Nyetimber estate in Sussex boasts a rich and noble history. There’s mention of it in the Domesday Book in 1086, and it also served as the home of Anne of Cleves, Henry VIII’s fourth wife. Centuries later, Nyetimber wowed the world after planting Champagne’s trio of vine varieties – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier – in 1988, showing they could ripen in England’s cool climate. At a blind tasting in 1997, the 1992 vintage stunned judges, who assumed it came from Champagne. Since then, Nyetimber has won rave reviews and prizes. Wines are crafted on the 170-hectare estate, owned by Eric Heerema, with winemaker Cherie Spriggs at the helm. Nyetimber received the prestigious ‘English Wine Producer of the Year’ award in 2016 from IWSC.
