Flavour Profile
Priorat in northeastern Spain has a huge reputation worldwide for its red wines. “This tiny wine region is producing some of Spain’s most exciting and expensive wine … ridiculously low yields of arrestingly concentrated wine” wrote the World Atlas of Wine.
There’s no better illustration than this tremendous four-year-old Munt Roca Selecció Reserva. It’s from a cellar perched high in the region’s rugged, steeply sloping schist-covered hillsides that has now, due to economic pressures, had to close its doors.
From ancient, 80-year-old vines of Garnacha and Cariñena with a little Cabernet Sauvignon, all tended organically, this is a rich, dark, weighty red. Over a year in French oak barrels has lent extra complexity to the intense, spicy red fruits. Open a few hours early and decant, or cellar.
