The Spirit
The original sugar plantation and distillery were acquired by William Sandiford in the early 18th century. In 1747 the property passed into the hands of John Sober, who appointed Sir John Gay Alleyne as manager. So successful was Sir John that the estate was renamed Mount Gay. Now it is owned by Rémy Cointreau and, benefiting greatly from this company’s wide distribution network, Mount Gay Rum has become very popular all around the world. What distinguishes Black Barrel? Although it is made from single column and double pot distilled rum, just like other Mount Gay rums, Black Barrel uses a higher proportion of double pot distillates. And, importantly, it is finished in heavily charred bourbon barrels (hence the name) before bottling.
