Flavour Profile
Mention Sauvignon Blanc today and you may think first of New Zealand’s Marlborough region, which took the world by storm in the 1980s. Second, however, it’ll be the Loire region of Sancerre that will spring to mind, bastion of arguably the finest, most classic examples of Sauvignon Blanc in the world. Also some of the most expensive.
The region lies within the Loire’s Central Vineyards, away from the coast, with gently rolling hills dotted by charming villages where you’ll be served the region’s great wines at the local restaurants and bars.
Domaine Michel Girault is a superb, little family estate of just 12 hectares, founded in the village of Bué in the 1970s by the eponymous Michel. His two sons Anthony and Olivier have been in charge for the last 20 years, gradually converting the vineyards to organic.
Pure Sauvignon Blanc, aged on its lees for a minimum of 8 months to add roundness and richness, Les Beaux Regards Organic Sancerre is an exceptional white and a classic partner with seafood or goat’s cheese.
