The Story Behind the Bottle

Maison Joseph Drouhin has been shaping Burgundy’s story since 1880 – over 140 years of quiet mastery and meticulous winemaking.

Today, the reins are in the hands of the founder’s four grandchildren. Philippe Drouhin, who once trailed his father through the vines, now oversees them. He’s a trailblazer in sustainable viticulture, steering the estate from organic to full biodynamic farming.

His sister, Véronique Boss-Drouhin, is the winemaker and guardian of the house style. “It is my duty to respect the grapes that arrive in the winery in order to enhance the signatures of our precious and esteemed terroirs to their fullest potential,” she says.

Chambertin Clos de Bèze is one of Burgundy’s crown jewels. The protagonist of Evelyn Waugh’s novel Brideshead Revisited, Charles Ryder praises the Grand Cru while dining with the wealthy businessman Rex Mottram: “I rejoiced in the Burgundy. It seemed a reminder that the world was an older and better place than Rex knew.”

William Kelley of Wine Advocate gives it 94–95 points and writes: “the 2023 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with notes of dark berries, plums, spices and espresso roast”.

It’s already showing grace, but the best is yet to come – expect peak drinking between 2032 and 2055.
