The Story Behind the Bottle

Kumeu River Rays Road Chardonnay is from a single vineyard in Hawke’s Bay, where the limestone soils give a Chablis-like flinty finesse.

Under the stewardship of Michael Brajkovich MW, this latest 2024 vintage is being hailed as one of the finest in recent memory, despite significantly reduced yields. The wines are elegant, flinty and crafted in the classic European tradition with minimal oak influence, with the aim of bringing maximum terroir expression.

“Amongst the very best Chardonnay producers in the world is Kumeu River in New Zealand. Their Chardonnays were put to the test a few years ago when several were assessed blind, intermixed with some very serious Puligny-Montrachets and Meursaults. Kumeu River triumphed to such an extent that it became almost embarrassing.... Factor in the prices that frankly make a mockery of much of White Burgundy and Napa and you are left scratching your head as to why Kumeu River is not uttered in the same breath as Leflaive, Ramonet or Marcassin” Neal Martin.

Zesty and mineral-driven, this will reward cellaring – if you can resist!
