The Story Behind the Bottle

Thirty years ago Marlborough was known only for barley and sheep. The success story of this wine region is one of the most remarkable in modern times, and one in which Hunter's Wines has played a major part.

Ernie and Jane Hunter were among the first to put New Zealand on the world wine map. That was with Sauvignon Blanc from the little vineyard beside their winery – the Home Block. When shown outside New Zealand at our 1986 London Vintage Festival, their 1985 simply astonished customers and experts alike. It won every award going, sparked New Zealand newspaper headlines and a debate in the NZ parliament! The country suddenly realised it had an extraordinary wine to offer the world.

But, as well as establishing the benchmark for classic New Zealand Sauvignon, Hunter’s was also the region’s second winery ever to produce sparkling wine made with the traditional technique used in Champagne. It's a method that results in a greater density of bubbles and much more complex, yeasty flavours than most sparkling wines.

It's little wonder that its fixx, Miru Miru, has been awarded so many top scores. Fine, creamy and seriously delicious, this is a luxurious rival to Brut Champagne that's guaranteed to impress. Drink as an aperitif, with smoked salmon canapés.
