The Spirit
Masataka Takesuru fell in love with whisky while studying Chemistry at Glasgow University. Back home, he teamed up with Shinjiro Torii, founder of the Suntory distillery, to introduce ‘the real stuff’ to the Japanese people. But his early efforts were unsuccessful, as Japanese drinkers found Scotch whisky too fiery. Undeterred, they created a uniquely Japanese style of whisky, with the emphasis on harmony and balance. Today, unlike Scotland, where Single Malts are the most sought-after bottles, the best Japanese whiskies are often blends. Hibiki Harmony is the epitome of that style. Crafted from a selection of malt and grain whiskies aged in a variety of casks, it has a honey-like sweetness, with notes of candied peel and white chocolate.
