The Story Behind the Bottle
GD Vajra produces some of Barolo’s most elegant wines at their family winery in the hills above Barolo. “One of Piedmont’s best kept secrets… with sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level” said the Wine Advocate. The estate was founded in 1972 by Giuseppe Domenico (hence GD), who had just graduated from university and was one of the first in Piedmont to employ organic farming methods. They have continued using these techniques for the last 50 years, gaining official certification in 2019. 2021 is one of the finest vintages in recent years, producing wines that are built to last. And Ravera is one of the very best. Aged for 26 months in large Slavonian oak casks, even now, with air, the wine soars out of the glass with red fruits, white pepper, blackberry, crushed stone and taut freshess. Best to cellar a few years or a decade yet.
