Flavour Profile
Domaine Joseph Colin Saint-Aubin Les Champlots is a fine Premier Cru from what is perhaps Burgundy’s best-value village appellation. Saint-Aubin lies just next door to the legendary vineyards of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet – yet its wines are a fraction of the price.
Stephen Brook of Decanter notes “For many years the best producer in the village was Marc Colin, who has now handed over to his sons.” One of those is Joseph Colin, who inherited a small vineyard holding of just 6.5 hectares (18 acres) in Saint-Aubin and Chassagne. He takes a minimal-intervention approach – interfering as little as possible in the winemaking process to let the wine’s pure expression of its terroir shine through.
Although his estate isn’t certified biodynamic or even organic, Joseph avoids using chemicals in the vineyard and plans his winemaking year according to the lunar and tidal calendars. Does it make a difference? We can’t say – but his attention to detail certainly shines through in the quality of the wines.
The Les Champlots Premier Cru is perched high on the slope of Saint Aubin where a cool, breezy aspect produces wines with a lovely tension – especially in the hands of a master craftsman like Joseph Colin. Think crisp citrus and tight minerality rather than overt richness – Chardonnay in its most elegant, understated form.
