The Story Behind the Bottle

Sagrantino is the star grape of Montefalco, a tiny town nestled in Umbria – right in the heart of Italy. Renowned for its richness and power, Sagrantino was traditionally a wine that demanded time – maturing over at least 20 years into something truly unforgettable.

For decades, it’s only ever appealed to the most serious of collectors.

Enter Paolo and Antonella Presciutti, the sibling team who run the Agricola Mevante estate. They’re one of the best in Montefalco, with the awards to prove it, and have treated Sagrantino to a host of modern techniques. Harvesting from oldest vines, meticulous grape selection, maturation vessels ... the sort of techy stuff winemakers get very excited about.

But today’s wine, their pride-and-joy red, is something that should excite us all. A Sagrantino you don’t have to wait half a lifetime to enjoy.

It has that classic Sagrantino ‘oomph!’ of dark fruit and exotic spices balanced by a balsamic lick of freshness, and so smooth after 5 years’ ageing – 24 months in finest oak. It’s full-bodied, 15% alcohol, hugely flavoured, dense, mouthcoating. Best enjoyed slowly alongside hearty stews.
