The Spirit
Édouard Cointreau joined his family’s confectionary and liqueur business in 1875. He refined the focus on the orange, a rare fruit with unheard-of potential at the time. By 1885, Édouard had created Cointreau: a crystalline liqueur, three times more concentrated in flavour and less sweet than the liqueurs of the time. Today, Master Distiller Carole Quinton is the guardian of the orange-flavoured liqueur. Each orange is peeled by hand and the peels are then sun-dried for 3-5 days. The key is the perfect balance between the sweet and bitter orange essences. By using a neutral alcohol for distillation, the peels’ essences remain pure and unmasked. It’s a wonderful ingredient in many cocktails, or a delicious digestif over ice.
