The Story Behind the Bottle
With 15 unbroken generations devoted to Douro wine, this family dynasty is synonymous with quality. Barão de Vilar is the newest port house, ironically founded by a family with the longest history in port (they founded the great Quinta do Noval in 1715). Cousins Cristiano, Fernando and Alvaro Van Zeller got together to create this terrific winery that makes both fortified and table wine. White port has in the last decades fallen out of fashion, but the Van Zellers are determined to bring it back to life. Using port grapes Gouveio, Voisinho and Malvasia Fina from 40 year old vines ensures exceptional concentration of toffee and caramel, apple and orange notes, with terrific freshness. Serve this white port over ice, or add tonic and a slice.
