Javier Murúa and his father, Julián, started out with almost nothing in the 1980s, making a name for themselves by crafting their own wines rather than selling to the big brands. These days, they own several wineries – including Conde de los Andes, where Hemingway used to enjoy a glass or two.
But the Murúas remain modest, charming and loyal to their friends. Javier rings us after each vintage so we can get first pick of their finest vats for this silky, oak-aged Rioja.
With its easy-going, ripe red berry flavours and fragrant vanilla character, this supple Rioja is great on its own or with grilled meats or tapas.
