The Story Behind the Bottle
Just a short gallop from where notorious bushranger Ned Kelly was beseiged and captured in 1880 in Glenrowan was the Bailey family farm, its first vineyard set up in the 1860s and their first vintage produced in 1870. The Shiraz vines they planted in 1904 (and still harvest today) are enduring proof of the Bailey family’s winning way with big, bold reds – and their highly acclaimed Durif is no exception. This quirky grape is in fact a close relative of Shiraz and it’s famous for its inky impenetrable hue. “The dense, vivid colour heralds a massive full-bodied palate, with black fruits and liquorice within a fortress of tannins,” says Aussie wine guru James Halliday. This fine red tastes great with char-grilled steak or a chunky lamb burger!
