The Wine
Martinborough may fly under the radar compared to other New Zealand wine regions, but its quality is world class – especially for Pinot Noir. Nestled on the North Island, it earned its reputation thanks in large part to Clive Paton. A former dairy farmer with no winemaking experience, Clive was inspired by a scientific paper suggesting the region’s similarity to Burgundy. In the early 1980s, he planted 5 hectares of Pinot Noir – a bold move as few had tasted New Zealand wine. This red wine is crafted from some of the estate’s oldest Pinot Noir vines, with grapes handpicked for quality. It’s aged for 11 months in French oak, then matured in bottle for a further 8 months. Velvety and refined, with ripe red fruit and a long, elegant finish.
