Flavour Profile
Rioja is among Spain’s top wine regions, known for its rich, elegant red wines and Altos de la Guardia Reserva is an award-winning example of why Rioja is so popular.
Altos was founded in 2006 by the Haut-Brion-trained winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua. His aim was to make finest Rioja with Grand Cru Classé techniques. So he only uses old-vine grapes from vineyards at 700 metres altitude and climbing. At that height, nights are cold, even in summer, so the grapes are slow to ripen. All the better for freshness and elegance.
Add Jean-Marc’s expertise and classic French training, and it’s no surprise his ‘winery in the clouds’ has become the region’s most awarded estate, winning multiple trophies, including Best Rioja Winery.
This 2020 vintage is made using the best Tempranillo grapes from vines up to 80 years old and aged in French oak barriques for over a year, adding luxurious layers of richness and complexity. It has a luscious, velvety texture with juicy cassis and dark berry flavours, with hints of eucalyptus freshness and smoky oak lingering in the finish. This Reserva is delicious with roast lamb or hearty game dishes.
