Domaine Matrot 'La Fussière' 2017

Maranges 1er Cru AOC

Wine Advocate called this succulent red "full bodied, fleshy and expressive". It's from third-generation Elsa Matrot at her family's fine domaine and a little known village appellation. That makes it an excellent buy. Lovely fruit and complexity.

Established in 1909 by Joseph Matrot, this fine family domaine was run by his understated but talented grandson Thierry from 1976 until 2015. He then handed over the reins to his daughters Elsa and Adèle. They are today renowned as “a top-class Meursault producer” (Wine International), but also excel in other villages too. The sisters, like their father before them, believe in using oak sparingly – as La Revue du Vin de France wrote, “Domaine Matrot expresses the quintessence of terroir.” They let the fruit do the talking. The result is a portfolio of Burgundies that are intensely flavoured, pure tasting, with excellent ageing potential. From little known Maranges, this fine 2017 is exuberant in red fruits with chewy tannins and complexity.
