Established in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin is one of the most famous names in Burgundy. Andrew Jefford writes: “Quality is high throughout the range, with the Drouhin style one of great finesse and purity.” Today Joseph’s four grandchildren are in charge. In line with their biodynamic belief that great wines begin in the vineyard, they use only natural compost, allow grass to grow between vines, and eschew use of chemical products. When they have to replant a vineyard, they use stocks from their oldest plots (over 50 years old) in order to conserve the genetic character of their precious vines. This is their superb village Pommard, aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak casks, 20% of them new. Still young – either decant early or cellar.
