Château Capbern 2018

Saint-Estephe AOC

From the same team as renowned Calon Ségur and an estate that often performs above its Cru Bourgeois status, this is an elegant Saint Estèphe. With a dense black fruit core, herbal and cigar box nuances and a firm tannic framework, it'll age well.

Formerly known as Capbern Gasqueton, this Cru Bourgeois Saint Estèphe estate, along with 3ème Cru Classé Calon Ségur, was in the Gasqueton family for 10 generations. In 2012, it changed hands and quality has stepped up even higher. It lies in one of the finest parts of the appellation, between Phelan Ségur and Meyney, and every aspect is given Grand Cru care. Careful harvesting by hand and ageing in premium oak barriques, 60% new, and all that winemaking expertise result in exceptional quality. The 2018 has been well reviewed, with Wine Advocate's Lisa Perrotti-Brown awarding it 91-93 points and describing it as “full-bodied, rich and packed with juicy fruit”. Still youthful, yet already appealing, it will benefit from decanting. Or cellar.
