The Bret Brothers at La Soufrandière have a stellar reputation for fine Burgundy. From a small one-hectare, walled vineyard, planted by their grandfather, Le Clos du Grand Pére is fine and beautifully poised.

The Wine
The Bret brothers at La Soufrandière lead the field in Mâcon. Their grandfather bought the house that gives the domaine its name in 1947. Crucially he also purchased 4 hectares of vines in Pouilly-Vinzelles, but it wasn’t until 2000, when Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume withdrew them from the local co-operative, that the domaine was established. Le Clos de Grand-Père comes from one of the Brets’ oldest vineyards with vines between 40-115 years old. It’s a tiny, walled one-hectare plot on deep limestone soils right next to the Pouilly-Vinzelles hillside. Everything is handpicked and the vines have been farmed biodynamically since the brothers took over in 2000. There’s lovely depth of creamy fruit and a refreshing, mineral-edged finish.
