The Wine
If you want a top-class Right Bank claret at a down-to-earth price, this beguiling Saint-Emilion is a shrewd buy. The vineyards of Château Larcis Ducasse have their origins in Roman times, when the bacchanalian settlers saw the winemaking potential of the well-drained, south-facing slopes of the Côte Pavie. The wine's true potential, however, was only revealed after 2002, when Nicolas Thienpont teamed up with consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt to modernise the estate’s production. Yields of the 35-year-old vines are strictly limited. Every bunch is harvested by hand and wines are aged in 75% new oak. Wine Advocate called it "a fleshy, opulent wine". It’ll reward further ageing, but if you’re opening it now, decant it well in advance.
