A superb vintage for this Second Growth Saint-Julien. “I was blown away” says Jeb Dunnuck, “This inky hued beauty offers that rare mix of power and elegance”, while Vinous writes: “unctuous, deep and super-expressive, but not at all over-done”.

The Wine
After the original Léoville vineyards were divided between siblings in 1840, Château Léoville-Poyferre was the slowest to get off the ground in terms of quality. That was until Didier Cuvelier took control in the 1970s. He brought onboard renowned wine consultant Michel Rolland, implemented a replanting regime, modernised the winery, and its reputation flew. Today, the estate is owned by Sara Lecompte Cuvelier and it produces stylish Saint-Julien wines, often more supple than the other Léoville estates thanks to the higher portion of Merlot in the blend, 34% in the 2022. Cabernet Sauvignon is the main star, plus Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged for at least 18 months in 80% new French oak. Voluptuous with depth and plenty of polish.
