Pauillac AOC 5ème Grand Cru Classé

Rated 94-95 points by James Suckling, this is a great release from Haut-Batailley. Powerful and dense, with the structure and muscle for long ageing, yet with finesse and poise. A fifth growth with echoes of its stable mate, Château Lynch Bages.

The Wine
Château Haut Batailley is a distinguished Fifth Growth estate in the south of the Pauillac region, very well placed next door to Lynch Bages, Pichon Lalande and Latour. It was created in 1942, when Batailley was split between the two Borie brothers, Marcel and François. Until 2017, François Borie ran it, before he sold it to the Cazes family, owners too of Château Lynch Bages. Making the most of the 22-hectare vineyard planted on deep gravel beds over limestone, Jean-Michel Cazes has increased the proportion of Merlot in the wine to show a more opulent style, with 60% aged in new oak. A big, rich claret with generous blackcurrant fruit, classic pencil shaving and toasty spice and a firm structure, it has the credentials for long ageing.
