The Wine
St Hallett is a highly regarded winery in the premium Barossa Valley. It was founded in 1944 by Bill Lindner, who converted the old slaughterhouse and broke with the family’s tradition as butchers. As with most cellars at the time, they gained a reputation for fortified wines, which changed to table wines in the 1980s with the release of the formidable Old Block Shiraz. Blackwell Shiraz uses grapes sourced from the northwest corner of the valley in Ebenezer, Greenock and Seppeltsfield. It's named after their winemaker for 30 years, Stuart Blackwell. Helen McCarthy now has that role and takes great care in matching each separate batch of wine to its optimum oak barrel. There the wine stays for 12-18 months, before the final blend is made.
