The Wine
“This is the year to start taking white Burgundies from the Mâconnais seriously” wrote Jancisrobinson.com in 2023. And this very fine Pouilly Vinzelles bears this out. It’s from the Bret Brothers at La Soufrandière, who broke away from the family estate to do things differently. They introduced biodynamic viticulture for starters, to make the vines stronger and more resilient and adopted a no-sulphur philosophy. Pouilly Vinzelles is one of Mâconnais’s top villages and Les Quarts one of its finest slopes, put forward for Premier Cru status. From 45-80 year old vines, Les Quarts 2020 is part fermented in oak casks with wild yeasts and aged there for 17 months. It has added creaminess from malolactic fermentation. A powerful, ageworthy white.

Forget Meursault and Montrachet. It's time for Mâconnais
