The Wine
In 1986, two families in Campania's premium Irpinia region (home to world famous Taurasi wines) joined forces to create Feudi di San Gregorio. They helped spearhead a renaissance in southern Italian winemaking, and in particular the use of the region’s amazing native grapes. Top of the list is Aglianico, which shares many of the characteristics of Barolo's great Nebbiolo. Intense cherry fruit, firm but silky tannins and good acidity mean the wines can age for decades. It mellows beautifully in oak too, which you'll taste in this Riserva that matured 18-24 months in barrel and many years in bottle before release. The volcanic soils of the vineyards lend a mineral finesse to this ageworthy red. For drinking now, open early and decant.
