Bordeaux AOC

Le Bonalguet is a sublime claret brimful of rich fruit and St Emilion-like finesse. “Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability,” says Decanter of the 2017 vintage. With three Golds and abundant cherry, cassis character, this is excellent value.

The Wine
Not many wines can boast three top Gold medals and 11 in the two years before but that was the triumphant haul for this claret in 2017, 2016 and 2015. It’s from a small estate in Saint Germain du Puch between the city of Bordeaux and Saint Emilion. Here, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown on clay and limestone soils typical of the greater Saint Emilion region. Owners Alexandre and Agnès Sueur work hard with winemaker Grégory Dalla Longa to make wines that reflect this very special terroir and also each vintage’s unique characteristics. 2017 was “the year of the frost” (Jancis Robinson), with 45% fewer wines made. But many (like this) were of very good quality. Decant an hour prior to serving with roast lamb or pan-fried duck.
