The Wine
Château Gigault is owned by Christophe Reboul Salze, with Bordeaux legend Stéphane Derenoncourt as winemaker (Stéphane has consulted for the likes of La Mondotte, Canon La Gaffelière and Pavie Macquin). They release two wines – a traditionally made claret and this, their no-expense-spared Cuvée Viva. Made from hand-picked Merlot grown in low-yielding, top-sited vineyards in Blaye on the Right Bank, this is an opulent, deeply flavoured claret. Succulent dark fruit is joined by gentle spice and toasty notes from ageing in French oak barrels. The 2022 vintage was one of the estate’s finest and it’s a real treat in magnum. Delicious now but will happily keep for a few more years.
