Handsome Château de Puligny Montrachet is one of very few proper ‘châteaux’ in Burgundy. Clos du Château is from a small, walled vineyard within the estate’s grounds – a beguiling, classic white Burgundy with a hint of Puligny’s renowned complexity.

The Wine
Despite centuries of wine growing history, Château de Puligny Montrachet only rose to its current heights with the arrival of Etienne de Montille in 2002. Etienne, whose family own Domaine de Montille, brought a fresh approach, reducing yields in the vineyards and working in the cellar to reduce the presence of oak in the wines. Clos du Château is a small vineyard within the grounds of the estate. Classified ‘Bourgogne Blanc’, the wine is nonetheless from Puligny and indeed displays some of its renowned character, not least a lovely nectarine, cream and subtle nutty character. This is a terrific value introduction to white Burgundy from one of its most prominent estates. Serve lightly chilled with pan-fried scallops, risotto or poultry.
