The Wine
Neal Martin of The Wine Advocate writes: “Some of the greatest Spanish wines I have ever tasted come from this region. Not Rioja, not Priorat, but Ribera del Duero.” Ribera is especially known for its long-aged Tempranillo reds – led by the legendary £390-a-bottle Vega Sicilia Único. Bodegas Tamaral is another of the region’s top estates, based in the same ‘Golden Mile’ as Vega Sicilia. This fine Gran Reserva is made purely from Tempranillo, known locally as Tinto Fino. Aged for over two years in mainly French oak, then held back in bottle until perfectly mature, it’s wonderfully smooth with savoury plum and cherry flavours. A rich taste of everything Ribera does best – and a top choice with lamb.
