Vin de France

Norrel Robertson MW adores the ancient, high vines of Calatayud and makes great wines that score very highly. Most are Garnacha, but this is a superb, barrel-fermented Macabeo from vines up to 85 years old. Rich, Burgundian even, and complex.

The Wine
Meet Norrel Robertson, a Flying Scotsman (nicknamed El Escoces Volante) and one of only four Masters of Wine in Spain. He travelled the world making wine before an assignment to Spain in 2003. He fell in love with the ancient, high-altitude vines of Calatayud and now can't drag himself away. Most of his wines feature Garnacha, but recently he discovered two vineyards of ancient Macabeo, 56 and 85 years old. With much hard work, he's brought them back to life and with the grapes made a gorgeous, Burgundian-style white. Barrel-fermented and aged in oak on its lees for 15 months, it’s been given proper Grand Cru treatment. A fine, mouthfilling white with smoky notes and a core of freshness. Only gently chill. Ideal with panfried fish.
