Von Buhl has been making remarkable Pfalz wines, supped by statesman and royalty alike, for the last 170 years. German Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck chose the estate’s Riesling to toast the 1869 opening of the Suez Canal. The estate is blessed with exceptional vineyards – 8 Grands Crus and 6 Premiers Crus. So good in fact, it made head winemaker of Bollinger give up his prestigious post to make wine at Von Buhl. Today his great work is continued by Gregor Hofer. Freundstück is a tiny GG, next door to the better known Kirchenstück. Its soils – sandstone with limestone scree and basalt – lend minerality and zip to this great Riesling, while low yields adds intensity and long lees ageing brings a Burgundian richness. Superb cellar potential.
