Merlot 'Plummy' is a classic description for Merlot, alongside blackcurrants, damsons and blackberries. It is one of the world's most popular, juicy and easiest drinking style of reds. Chile is a smart tip for value. Traditionally it is the big gun of Bordeaux's Right Bank, most famously grown around the villages of Pomerol and Saint-Emilion. It's lighter in colour and tannin than Cabernet, but with a more plump body and often more alcohol.
