Château de Pougelon is an impressive Beaujolais property, first built in 1662 with some rooms grandly decorated in the Henry IV and Louis VIII style. The Descombe family are the third 'clan' to own the estate, enlarging it so the vineyards extend to Brouilly, Fleurie, Juliénas and Morgon. This is a terrific red from the family's Clos Reisser vineyard, a plateau at 245 metres altitude, facing the great Mont Brouilly. Fine soils, a temperate climate and a gentle hand in the winemaking ensure a wine of great finesse. A pure-Gamay Cru with ripe, silky black fruit, still with that crunch of freshness. Now with two years' age, it's supple for sipping on its own, but shows at its best with white meats, charcuterie, a cheese soufflé or risotto.
