Every wine from Westend Estate is a winner – a superb balance of intense fruit, character and freshness and, as James Halliday notes, owner Bill Calabria is “understandably proud of his achievements”. Bill was a champion boxer in his youth, in fact, but gave it all up in his 20s to be the family’s winemaker. Many years and Trophies later, he has been awarded the Order of Australia for his contribution to the wine industry. Bill now leaves the day to day winemaking to the excellent Emma Norbiato, though he still has the final say! The premise of the winery remains the same – high quality wines using the best quality grapes, fermented in small parcels. Rounded and elegant, his No.1 Chardonnay is delicious solo or with sauced fish and chicken.
