More information
To many wine lovers, and critics too, Brunello di Montalcino represents the very best of Italy. They offer gorgeous bold fruit balanced by refreshing bite and smooth tannins that reward long ageing. While its fellow Tuscan DOCG, Chianti, can be subtle and subdued, Brunello tends to be flamboyant, bold and precocious in youth, taking time to learn ‘humility’. In both phases, the wines are sublime. Sangiovese is the grape, known here as Brunello, a clone that produces, in this warmest and driest part of Tuscany, wines with amazing velvety fruit power and depth. Vinea Familiae Pinzale is from renowned Brunello winemaker Paolo Vagaggini and a vintage that is proving more forward than most. Eclipsed by the stellar 2010, 2011 is an excellent buy.
