Our Buyer for Italy, Leo, believes this is possibly Italy’s finest Sauvignon. It comes from a top area for white wine, Friuli Isonzo in the northeast, and the Piere vineyard on the acclaimed Vie di Romans estate. There vines bask in sunshine by day and benefit from cool Alpine air at night, accentuating the wine’s aromas. The Gallo family are so-called terroirists, dedicated to maximising quality from any given plot, and they apply meticulous care and sheer hard work in pursuit of their goals. The wine has all the fresh minerality and grassiness of a top Sauvignon, but also a rich texture, a lovely weight, creaminess and delectable fruit. Cellared properly, it ages for years. Great with many chicken dishes, sauced fish or salmon en croûte.
