  • 90pts, James Suckling, 2016

This is a beautifully poised, 90 point Sangiovese from a tiny, top quality enclave next door to Tuscany’s famous Montalcino. Still relatively obscure, its wines should be snapped up. From a historic estate, this is a gorgeous, rich, complex red.

Decanter magazine declared back in 2013 “The gauntlet is down. The challenge is to rival the very best – and all the signs are that Montecucco is up for it.” This tiny area of Tuscany was first officially recognised in 1998 and raised to DOCG in 2011. It lies next door to famed Montalcino and has attracted some very big names in Tuscan winemaking. No wonder its wines have risen from near obscurity to stardom to those in the know. Not only that, conditions in this subregion close to the coast are so good that the vines tend to be naturally organic. This great estate has 700 hectares of land, but just 32 hectares of vines. From its finest grapes, all aged in French oak barriques, it makes this exciting, elegant wine. A fine match to pork.
